From a wasteland to something Perth can be proud of

During recent Parliament Estimates hearings, Peter Katsambanis, Member for North Metropolitan Region, called for the much-needed redevelopment of the eyesore sitting in front of Parliament House.

The fountains, which sit above the freeway and look out towards St Georges Terrace, were decommissioned in 2005 due to a combination of structural leaks and general dilapidation.

"Parliament House is an important building for the people of Western Australia and it shouldn't have an eyesore right in front of it ruining its aesthetic attraction." Mr Katsambanis said.

"We have a great opportunity to turn a wasteland of old concrete into a new amazing place of public art which the people of Perth can be proud of and which can become an iconic attraction for our city.

"We need a long-term solution and planning needs to start now. This should include input from all stakeholders, including Parliamentary officers, the City of Perth, the Perth Public Art Foundation and the WA public.

"I'd love to see what the community can come up with by way of a long term vision for this space. I hope that eventually this vision will end up realising the long held dream of connecting the CBD with Parliament House.

"But in the short term let's turn a current eyesore into a great new attraction in the heart of our great city." Mr Katsambanis concluded.
