Time for action to prepare for bushfire season
21 October 2013
Peter Katsambanis, Liberal Member for North Metropolitan Region, has urged local residents in vulnerable parts of the northern suburbs to prepare their homes and families ahead of the bushfire season.
“Bushfires are a part of life in summer. They can start suddenly, unexpectedly and move fast. They can be extremely destructive and even deadly." Mr Katsambanis said.
“Now is the time for action – not complacency,”
“Preparation is the key to survival. Any house or property near bush is at risk. A well prepared property has a better chance of surviving a fire.
“Preparation can be as simple as pruning back trees, cleaning gutters, cutting long grass and clearing rubbish from around your home.
With New South Wales currently experiencing the most destructive bushfires in a decade, increased community engagement and education is vital in protecting lives and property. Last year alone, there were more than 3,800 bushfires across WA.
The State Government has committed $12.3 million over four years for greater protection for firefighters through comprehensive crew cab protection.
This funding will provide extra protective equipment in 667 firefighting vehicles that operate in high risk bushfire areas. Other assistance includes a boost to the State’s aerial firefighting fleet, which would now be able to drop even more water to support ground crews.
“WA’s firefighters are prepared for a difficult bushfire season, but everyone needs to do their part to prepare.” Mr Katsambanis said.
“Every West Australian must understand that our professional and volunteer firefighters are just one part of the defence against the threat posed by bushfires - we need people to do their bit to protect themselves.
