Residents urged to connect with local police
Peter Katsambanis, Member for North Metropolitan Region, has called on local residents to connect with police throughout Perth's northern suburbs to help make our community safer and more secure.
"The new Frontline 2020 policing model will see more local police focusing their efforts on local neighbourhoods to keep our law-abiding citizens safe, while having a larger district response force ready to deal with emergency situations." Mr Katsambanis said.
"The new model allows citizens to directly connect with their Local Police Teams through mobile phone, community events and social media.
"All you need to do is go to www.frontline2020.police.wa.gov.au then type in your suburb and you will immediately get the name and photo of your local senior officer as well as the mobile phone number of your Local Policing Team.
"This direct link between local residents and local police will enable quicker response times and help police address issues in specific areas sooner to minimise the impact of any criminal activity.
"By building stronger relationships with local residents, small business owners, community groups and other service providers these Local Policing Teams will better target trouble spots and known offenders.
A trial of the new model in the south eastern suburbs of Perth dramatically reduced the number of police callouts and saw criminal activity reduce by 8.4% over a six month period.
The new North West Metropolitan District will have around 550 officers, a 24/7 Control Centre and a large detective team. These resources are in addition to the Local Police Teams which will concentrate on targeting crime in their neighbourhoods. Police stations in the North Metropolitan Region are located in Yanchep, Clarkson, Wanneroo, Joondalup, Hillarys, Warwick, and Scarborough.
“These changes will improve the way our WA Police work with their local community to fight crime.
Other benefits of this reform include efficiency gains in the areas of administration, meaning fewer resources are spent on duplications and more put towards frontline policing.
“I remain committed to reducing criminal activity and addressing the causes of crime to better protect our local community. So I am proud to be part of the WA Liberal government that has introduced this new and innovative approach to policing which will produce real results for law abiding citizens." Mr Katsambanis concluded.
