More support for local sports clubs and young athletes

The State Government has demonstrated its strong support for sporting clubs and young athletes across Western Australia by announcing the ‘Supporting Community Sport’ initiative.

Peter Katsambanis, Member for North Metropolitan Region, welcomed today’s news saying this new programme confirms again the WA Government’s commitment to doing whatever it can to get kids active and participating in sport.

“This new initiative will help with upgrading vital shared equipment in sporting clubs across Perth, but it will also assist junior athletes with expenses incurred in traveling for representative sport.” Mr Katsambanis said.

“Two huge issues for any sporting club are addressing the costs associated with getting their younger athletes representative experience, especially with travel costs, and of course upgrading necessary equipment.

“I’m proud the WA Government has been able to launch this initiative that will be a great boost for clubs and kids in Perth’s northern suburbs.” Mr Katsambanis said.

There is a $2million metropolitan component of the scheme, which provides financial support to junior athletes who need to travel in pursuit of State and national representation.

$500 subsidies are also available to clubs looking to increase or upgrade shared sporting equipment which is accessible to all club members.

“I encourage all local sports clubs and budding sports stars to take advantage of this new initiative.” Mr Katsambanis concluded.
