Lotterywest grant supports Aboriginal oral history project
Peter Katsambanis, Member for North Metropolitan Region, today presented a Lotterywest grant of $23,650 on behalf of the WA Government to the City of Subiaco to allow the city to further develop its Aboriginal oral history project.
“The Subiaco area has been significant to Aboriginal people for thousands of years, so it is very appropriate that the City acts to capture this unique history. This grant will help ensure that the project can continue to operate and further develop.” Mr Katsambanis said.
“I am particularly pleased to make this presentation in the same week that the Premier of Western Australia, Hon Colin Barnett, released the draft Noongar Recognition Bill which recognises Noongars as traditional owners of Perth and South-West land.
The Subiaco Museum began developing the oral history project in 2013. It aims to provide a bridge between oral tradition and written history to ensure that culture, stories and important events will never be forgotten.
“Oral history allows people to share their memories, stories and culture and provides an opportunity to capture and preserve some of the most unique and precious aspects of our recent history.
“Western Australia is the only State where the money raised from lottery products is distributed back to the community to support a range of good causes, like the preservation of Aboriginal history.” Mr Katsambanis concluded.
