Local sporting clubs and young athletes receive more support
26 June 2014
Local sporting clubs and young athletes have been awarded grants from the State Government under the ‘Supporting Community Sport’ initiative.
Peter Katsambanis, Liberal Member for North Metropolitan Region, said that the community in Perth’s northern suburbs clearly appreciates the value of being involved in sport and welcomes the additional support from the State Government.
“This initiative of the State Government is broken into two categories: travel support for young athletes and grants to assist clubs with equipment upgrades.” Mr Katsambanis said.
Fourteen young athletes from suburbs including Butler, Banksia Grove, Clarkson, Quinns Rocks and Two Rocks have received funding to contribute to the cost of travelling to participate in representative sport events.
“Taking part in representative sport is a huge milestone in any young athlete’s career. It can lead to bigger things and can change your life.
“It’s often too expensive for families to afford to send their children to these representative events, so I’m very happy that the State Government will support these athletes in meeting some of the costs of travel,” Mr Katsambanis said.
These young athletes will be representing our local area and our state in sports such as diving, judo, underwater hockey, ice hockey, rugby league, calisthenics, gymnastics, volleyball, surf lifesaving, cycling, flying disc and Australian Rules football.
The sports at which these young athletes excel are just some of the amazingly diverse range of sports on offer through our wonderful local sporting clubs.
Four of these local sporting clubs were successful in obtaining funding under the ‘Supporting Community Sport’ initiative to meet the cost of upgrading shared equipment. These clubs are:
- North Coast Rugby Union Football Club
- Brighton AFL Club
- West Coast Wolverines Gridiron Club
- North Coast Ball Club
“I am fully aware that local sporting clubs run on very tight budgets, which is why I am pleased to see a diverse range of sport receiving funding in the first round of this scheme.” Mr Katsambanis concluded.
In total, 420 athletes and 265 clubs have benefitted from the first metropolitan round of the Supporting Community Sport scheme.
The $4million program is administered through the Department of Sport and Recreation. Applications for the next round of both schemes will open later this year.
