Helpline targets elder abuse
The State Government has funded a dedicated helpline to support seniors who are being abused or being coerced into giving away money.
“I commend the State Government for its injection of $80,000 to fund the operation of this service.” Peter Katsambanis MLC, Member for North Metropolitan Region, said.
“We must embrace the value and contributions our seniors have made and continue to make to our community, rather than treating them as a hindrance and abusing their vulnerability.
“In September 2013, I spoke out about the issue of elder abuse in the WA Parliament. This helpline is a great first step in recognising and addressing this serious problem.
Elder abuse is defined as harm to an older person taking place in an informal relationship of trust, such as with a family member, carer or friend. The abuse may take many forms including financial, emotional, social, physical and sexual abuse, and neglect. Financial abuse is the most common.
“I encourage anyone who is concerned about any type of elder abuse to contact this helpline on 1300 724 679 to seek advice on how to address the situation.” Mr Katsambanis concluded.
In addition to providing this helpline, the State Government recently produced ‘Stay connected and be involved’. This publication includes tips for older people on how to maintain their social connections to prevent abuse. This can be accessed by clicking here.
The helpline operating hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm. Advocare, a community service organisation advocating the welfare of older Western Australians, operates the helpline using State Government funding.
