Funding to help protect local beaches

25 September 2013

The WA Liberal National Government has announced new grants to help protect the City Beach Groyne, to help complete the Quinns Rocks coastal management project and to fund the continuation of coastline surveys from Scarborough to Sorrento.

Peter Katsambanis, Member for North Metropolitan Region, welcomed the Government’s investment that will help protect and preserve our unique coastal environment.

“The popularity of the beaches and coastline in Perth’s northern suburbs makes it vital that we have a strategy to manage this fragile environment for current and future generations.” he said.

“Our coastline is one of the most valuable assets, not just for our local area but for the whole of Western Australia.”

The following funding has been provided across the North Metropolitan Region as part of the new Coastal Adaption and Protection (CAP) grants program.

  • $120,000 will allow the Town of Cambridge to undertake maintenance works on City Beach Groyne;
  • $50,000 will allow the City of Wanneroo to finalise the design and documentation of a coastal management option for Quinns Rocks; and
  • $12,500 will allow the City of Stirling to continue beach profile surveys from Scarborough to Sorrento.

“By providing this funding the government is ensuring that our coastal assets are properly managed so they can be protected from the impacts of ocean forces,” Mr Katsambanis said.

“It will ensure that the amazing beach lifestyle we enjoy today will be preserved for our children and grandchildren to also enjoy in the future.”
